Call for projects: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Studies and France
The Embassy of France to Australia is looking to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders academics, researchers, writers and artists, to promote the further exploration of a shared history and to foster collaborative projects.
About the call
Overview
Australia and France are committed to a strong collaborative agenda with respect to the relationship between France and Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities. In December 2023, Australia and France have put forward a joint submission to the Memory of the World Register of UNESCO, comprised of Aboriginal artefacts and an extensive expedition diary containing unique examples of the Palawa language (Tasmania), called the D’Entrecasteaux Archives. A digital copy of the D’Entrecasteaux Archives has been entrusted to the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Studies (AIATSIS), for translation and further research.
A joint committee is working on the process of repatriation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander human remains that are currently in France. The work of the committee relies on significant non-invasive research to establish the provenance of the remains and the circumstances of their presence in France.
The French Australian Cultural Exchange Foundation (FACEF), which has been recently instituted, will support artists through residencies and cultural programs, creating new opportunities for First Nations artists.
Several other research and cultural projects are underway, at the initiative of researchers and artists of both countries, with a wide range of interests, for instance in linguistics, history, archaeology, art history, and the arts. The Embassy of France is looking to support research and creation with mobility grants, allowing for travel from France to Australia, or Australia to France, including French overseas territories.
These grants may cover travel costs for the purpose of fieldwork, organising or participating in a workshop, conference, festival or similar events, accessing relevant archives and museums, creation, translation, and writing.
A total budget of $24,000 AUD is available through this call.
Eligibility
Applications are open to researchers, writers and artists of any seniority level who are Australia-based, although the funding may cover costs to invite France-based researchers, writers and artists to collaborate in Australia. Early career researchers, including PhD students, and emerging artists are encouraged to apply.

A total of AUD24,000 (twenty-four thousand Australian dollars) is made available for this call. Submitted projects must be completed before 1st May 2025.
