RESEARCH IN THE PACIFIC

FRANCOPHONE PRESENCE IN OCEANIA

Francophone islands in the Pacific include:

  • New Caledonia – a French Overseas Territory with a unique autonomous status: ‘Collectivité d’Outre Mer sui generis

  • French Polynesia – a French Overseas Territory ‘Collectivité d’Outre Mer’

  • Wallis and Futuna - a French Overseas Territory ‘Collectivité d’Outre Mer’

  • Vanuatu – the Republic of Vanuatu has three official languages: French, English and Bislama, and has historical ties with France and New Caledonia.

 

Most of the research priorities and some of the actors outlined in the French Research Landscape will be applicable and present in these islands.

  • Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) in New Caledonia

  • Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM) in New Caledonia and French Polynesia

  • Centre for Island Research and Environmental Observatory (CRIOBE) in French Polynesia

Regional Networks: 

  • The Pacific Community (SPC) - SPC is the principal scientific and technical organisation supporting development in the Pacific region

  • Pacific Islands Universities Research Network (PIURN) - Its objective is to enhance research, innovation and collaboration to better serve the needs and aspirations of Pacific communities.

  • Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) - Its mandate is to promote cooperation in the Pacific region and provide assistance in order to protect and improve its environment and to ensure sustainable development for present and future generations.

Australian organisations focused on the Pacific

New Caledonia

  • New Caledonian Agronomic Institute (IAC)

  • Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies  (ISEE)

  • Lagoon Aquarium (website)

French Polynesia

  • Institut Louis Malardé for medical research (ILM)

  • Research Delegation of the Government of French Polynesia – various programs supported locally

​Most of the institutions present in New Caledonia would also have cooperative program with Vanuatu and Wallis & Futuna.

Thanks to the Fonds Pacifique program manage by the Embassy of France to Australia, several projects have been conducted, showcasing the collaboration between Australian researchers and researchers from French territories in the Pacific.
